FATBOY SLIM
Fatboy Slim, all’anagrafe Quentin Leo Cook, conosciuto anche come Norman Cook e anche come The BPA (The Brigthon Port Autority), (Bromley, 31 luglio 1963), è un disc jockey e produttore discografico inglese. Il suo stile è conosciuto come big beat, una combinazione di hip hop, breakbeat, rock e R&B.
Dopo essere cresciuto a Redhill, si trasferisce a Brighton per frequentare il college. Inizia a lavorare come DJ e poco tempo dopo si sposta a Hull per suonare il basso nella band degli Housemartins. Dopo il tour con Billy Bragg, il gruppo ottiene un contratto con l’etichetta Go! Discs. Il primo singolo prodotto è Flag Day che ottiene un discreto riconoscimento, seguito dal brano Sheep. Ma è con il terzo singolo, Happy Hour, che la band ottiene il primo successo raggiungendo il terzo posto nelle classifiche inglesi. L’album London 0 Hull 4 scala la top 10 con il singolo Caravan Of Love (una cover degli Isley Brothers) il gruppo raggiunge il primo posto. Il secondo album è The People Who Grinned Themselves To Death, che segna anche il termine del progetto. Norman torna a Brixton e riprende la carriera di DJ. Lavora ad un mix del celebre I Got Your Soul di Eric B e Rakim, per poi formare il collettivo di artisti Beats International. Nel1989 realizzano il singolo Dub Be Good To Me che arriva in prima posizione. L’LP del gruppo è Let Them Eat Bingo, seguito nel 1991 da Excursion On The Version. Norman divorzia dalla moglie e per due anni non produce niente. Ashley Slater, vocalist dei Microgroove, collabora con i Beats International al loro secondo album. Forti sono anche i suoi interessi nel Funk, il nostro diventa animatore del gruppo Freak Power, il singolo di quest’ultimi Turn On, Tune In, Cop Out si piazza ai primi posti delle classifiche e viene utilizzato dalla Levi’s per una campagna pubblicitaria. Nel 1995, sotto lo pseudonimo di Pizzaman, Norman realizza un album in cui spiccano i singoli Sex On The Streets e Happiness. Norman e Slater, nel 1996, pubblicano l’album More Of Everything…For Everybody. Poco tempo dopo Norman registra brani sotto vari nomi d’arte: Mighty Dub Kats, Fried Funk Food.
Con Damien Harris fonda la Skint Records, e cambia il proprio nome in Fatboy Slim. Nel 1996 arriva l’album Better Living Through Chemistry riferito ad uno slogan statunitense degli anni 1950, sull’importanza del Valium come calmante per i bambini iperattivi. Evidente il riferimento alla chimica e ai Chemical Brothers, gruppo che lo ha convinto a realizzare l’album. Durante questo periodo suona come DJ in club londinesi come il Big Kahuna Burger o il Sunday Social, che passano il suo singolo Santa Cruz.
Il Big Beach Boutique a Brighton(2002)
Con gli amici Damien e G Money fonda il Big Beat Boutique, club a Brighton, in cui svolge il ruolo di DJ resident. L’etichetta Caroline/Astralwerks promuove i suoi progetti negli Stati Uniti. Come Mighty Dub Katz pubblica Magic Carpet Ride (1997), seguito da NoWay (1998). Remixa brani per Cornershop, Beastie Boys, Wildchild e Fluke, per poi iniziare a lavorare all’album You’ve Come A Long Way, Baby, titolo tratto da uno slogan delle sigarette Virginia Slims. Il primo singolo è The Rockafeller Skank, tormentone dell’estate 1998 e colonna sonora del videogame FIFA 99. Seguono Gangster Trippin’ e Praise you. Il terzo singolo è Right Here, Right Now, che riscuote un enorme successo a livello internazionale. Il 6 luglio2001, Slim tiene un concerto sulla spaggia di Brighton davanti a 40.000 persone. L’anno seguente ripete l’evento di fronte a 250.000 spettatori Lo stesso anno esce Palookaville, album preceduto dal singolo Slash Dot Dash. Continua a tenere concerti sulle spiagge, che ormai sono il suo marchio di fabbrica, in occasione di date particolari come, ad esempio, il veglione di San Silvestro o il giorno di capodanno radunando sempre migliaia di persone. Nel 2008 si ripresenta con lo pseudonimo di The BPA, pseudonimo poco conosciuto in Italia, e pubblica i singoli Seattle e Toe Jam che arrivano subito nelle classifiche dei singoli più programmati alle radio.

Fatboy Slim, or Quentin Leo Cook, known as Norman Cook or as The BPA (The Brigthon Port Autority), (Bromley, July 31st 1963), is a disc jockey and an English record producer . His style is known as big beat, a mix of hip hop, breakbeat, rock and R&B.
Grown up in Redhill, he moved to Brighton to go to the college. He started to work as a DJ and then he moved to Hull to play bass with the band Housemartins. After a tour with Billy Bragg, the band drew a contract up with the label Go! Discs. The first single produced is Flag Day, that is successful enough, followed by the song Sheep. But it’s with the third single, Happy Hour, that the band has the first real success gaining the third place in the English charts. The album London 0 Hull 4 ascended the top 10 with the single Caravan Of Love (a cover of the Isley Brothers) and the band headed the chart. The second album is The People Who Grinned Themselves To Death, that marked the end of the project. Norman came back to Brixton to start again his career as a DJ. He worked to a mix of the famous I Got Your Soul by Eric B and Rakim, then formed the group of artists Beats International. In1989 they realized the single Dub Be Good To Me heading the chart. The LP of the band is Let Them Eat Bingo, followed in 1991 by Excursion On The Version. Norman divorced his wife and for two years he produced nothing. He was very interested in Funk too, so he became the leading spirit of the band Freak Power, and their single Turn On, Tune In, Cop Out headed the charts and was used by Levi’s for its ad campaign. In 1995, with the pseudonym Pizzaman, Norman realized an album including two beautiful singles, Sex On The Streets and Happiness. Norman and Slater, in 1996, released the album More Of Everything…For Everybody. A short while afterwards, Norman recorded some songs with many pseudonyms: Mighty Dub Kats, Fried Funk Food.
With Damien Harris created the Skint Records, and changed his name to Fatboy Slim. 1996 is the year of the album Better Living Through Chemistry referred to an American slogan of 50s, about the importance of Valium as a sedative for hyperactive children. The reference to chemistry and to the Chemical Brothers is clear, the band who convinced him to make the album. During this period he performed as a DJ in some clubs of London as the Big Kahuna Burger or the Sunday Social, that played his single Santa Cruz.
Big Beach Boutique in Brighton(2002)
With his friends Damien and G Money he created the Big Beat Boutique, a club in Brighton, where he performed as a resident DJ. The label Caroline/Astralwerks promoted his projects in the U.S.A. As Mighty Dub Katz released Magic Carpet Ride (1997), followed by NoWay (1998). Remixed some songs for Cornershop, Beastie Boys, Wildchild and Fluke, then he started to work to the album You’ve Come A Long Way, Baby: the title is taken from the slogan of the Virginia Slims cigarettes. The first single is The Rockafeller Skank, the summer hit of 1998 and soundtrack of the videogame FIFA 99. And then he released Gangster Trippin’ and Praise you. The third single Right Here, Right Now had a great international success. On July 6th 2001, Slim made a concert on the beach of Brighton in front of 40,000 people. The year after he repeated the event in front of 250,000 people. In the same year the album Palookaville was released, preceded by the single Slash Dot Dash. He did other concerts on the beach, his own trademark, on occasion of special date as the New Year’s Eve party or the New Year’s Day with an audience of thousands of people. In 2008 he used the pseudonym The BPA, not very known in Italy, and released the singles Seattle and Toe Jam heading immediately the charts of the most broadcasted singles.
